Clematis Season, 2021

Right now is the peak Clematis moment here in our garden. This refers, first of all, to what we call the Great Wall of Purple filled out by Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ on part of the west-facing wall of the house, around the corner from the front door. Here we are walking up the driveway to the …
Color Returns to the Front Garden

We’re coming out of a lull in which the Front Garden was almost entirely green. Sure, I know green is a color but still – it’s not a color. You know what I’m saying. Now, as we shift into summer, the real colors are coming back.
Blue Flowers for June

June is the month of blue flowers, or so it seems in our garden. Sadly, we are missing one of my favorites, Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis), which was lost to sewer repair. I planted a replacement, but it won’t bloom this year.

Instead, ‘Multi-Blue’ did not have a single drooping flower bud. There were a few wilted leaves, but the foliage was mostly clean.
The Heartbreak of Clematis Wilt
I was feeling pretty good about the Clematis ‘Multi-Blue’ I have growing on a tuteur in the Herb and Tomato Bed. By May 1, it had reached about 6′ and had a respectable number of swelling flower buds. Then I noticed that some of those buds and leaves were alarmingly listless and droopy. After a …
