There are certain shrubs and small trees whose flowers symbolize the peak of spring.
It’s been a rather wet, cold, and dismal weekend. One bright spot, though, was the sighting of another new avian visitor to the garden: the Red-headed Woodpecker. In fact, this was the first time either Judy or I had ever seen this particular bird, in the garden or out.
Recently Judy was on the back porch and noticed a small bird flitting in and out of the bird house that hangs just outside of the windows.
My fellow gardeners, the state of the container Tulips this year has been: AWESOME. And people who know me will tell you that I never use that word.
There’s a lot of Celandine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) in our garden and they’re blooming right now. Some people will warn you that this plant is too aggressive. On the other hand, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center calls it “… a fine species to grow in Eastern wildflower gardens, far less aggressive than the introduced …
When I got home last Friday I found that our second spring shipment of plants had arrived. Only one species was included: Mistflower (Conoclonium coelestinum). (I think this late spring is wreaking havoc with plant shipment schedules – I’ve got quite a few other species ordered that have yet to arrive.)

We’ve had lots of Goldfinches this winter, more than in recent years. They’re all over our two nyjer seed feeders.
Let’s return to our trip to Japan last September, shall we? Most of Tokyo has been demolished (by war, fire, and earthquake) and rebuilt multiple times. The neighborhood of Yanaka, however, was damaged less than most from the cataclysms of the 20th Century. As a result, it is one of the oldest areas of Tokyo.
