This is Bluestar’s big moment at the Lurie Garden, particularly Arkansas Bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii). The big billowing plant with needle-like leaves has turned from green to gold. When I took these pictures yesterday, they were scattered around the garden like golden clouds come to earth.
Book Review: The Plant Lover’s Guide to Hardy Geraniums, by Robin Parer. If you love Geraniums, you will love this book. If you don’t love Geraniums, this book may plant the seeds (or perhaps a division) of Geranium love in your gardener’s soul.
It’s been a fairly warm autumn so far. Leaves are slow to color, flowers to fade. Though they certainly are fading.
The name Aster comes from the Greek word for star. At this time of year, it feels like the Asters are exploding into a sort of floral supernova.
September is a transitional month. Summer fades away as fall creeps in. Let’s see what’s in bloom at the mid-point of this ninth month of the year.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, my favorite Rudbeckia is Brown-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba). Though the common name is puzzling – is the eye any more brown than either of the Rudbeckia species commonly known as Black-Eyed Susan (R. hirta and R. fulgida)?

OK, so here are the rest of our garden’s blooms taken this past Sunday.
I had a happy reunion with the garden after Judy and I returned from our trip late Saturday afternoon. The first thing I noticed were bright swaths of yellow that seemed to dominate the area in front of the house. Yellow – sometimes clear and light, sometimes golden, or shading into orange.
So we’re leaving on vacation tomorrow, but before we go I wanted to show you what’s going on in the front garden as we stand at August’s front door. For starters, here are the ‘Summer Beauty’ Alliums in full bloom (A. tanguticum).
